Did you know that you can create your own cloud, that is easy to see and that will make it easier to see with your own eyes what a cloud really is?
One of the questions that we get alot when driving is “what is a cloud made off” and it can be quite hard to explain (and understand) that clouds are made from evaporated water.
Now explaining it when there is tangible evidence that its true, is a bit easier. Thats why I was very excited when I realised that we could make an experiment involving water and hairspray… Let me explain.
Artificial cloud at home
When creating a cloud in a jar you will need:
- A big jar
- Ice
- Boiling water
- Hairspray
Now carefull when handling these things – you need to remember your safety and protect yourself and your kids at all time.
Start by boiling the water. Once its boiled add it to the bottom of the jar. Now remember that glass can brake when you add boiling water to it. Only allow the kids to do this part if you are comfortable with it.
Slowly place the jar on the table, and turn the lid upside down on the jar. Add ice to the lid.
Now – inside the glass steam is forming from the hot water, and it colides with the cold air that is forming right underneath the lid.
For you to be able to see this reaction you need to, carefully, add some hairspray into the jar. Lift the lid a little and spray into the jar, and quickly place the lid back onto the jar.
Now watch your jar, and see how a cloud is slowly forming in front of your eyes.
